When Frank Buncom wore uniform number 55 for the San Diego Chargers, he was the first of two superlative San Diego linebackers to wear that now famous numeral. Years later the team retired the jersey certainly not because of Buncom’s legacy or on-field exploits, but because it was worn by one Junior Seau.
The author of Finding Frank Full Circle in a Life Cut Short embarks on a journey that lasts over 40 years in a quest to define the quintessence and specialness of the former college All American at the University of Southern California and All Star professional football player.
Buncom’s life and death was sandwiched and squeezed between a time in this country’s history that was cramped by enormous violence and strife; a time of breakthrough achievements and breathtaking losses. His realizations were met in a life that overcame extravagant odds; a life that never blinked or shied from unreachable goals or unspeakable wrongs.
His time, his era, was an epoch before, a world apart from today’s society and today’s pace. Yet his lessons taught and learned those many years ago still can echo, still can enlighten, and still are valuable.
That he was mostly viewed as a helmeted, nameless number was nevertheless unfortunate for the usually adoring public that too often fawns over professional athletes, actors and actresses, for all the wrong reasons.
For those privileged to have spent time with him, who were mentored by him, he personified a determinedly driven life full of remarkable promise that was punitively cut short.
"Finding Frank is a special story. The story of Buncom and Ponce’s friendship is wonderful, but the story goes beyond just that. Finding Frank is the story of a vow made by one friend for another; a near lifetime spent recalling that vow, and the magic that came about from its fulfillment. It is 40 years of memory, topped by the wonderful reconnections that can be made in such a project; reuniting with friends from decades past, and in this particular case, seeing the spirit of Frank James Buncom II still alive in his son and grandson. Buzz Ponce was right when he said that this was not a football book..." ~ Todd Tobias

Finding Frank eBook Buzz Ponce
Finding Frank is more than a typical sports story. As a matter of fact, there isn't that much football in Buzz Ponces' book about, ironically, a football player. And that's the beauty. This is a story of an accomplished man to be sure, but it is also a story about a relationship formed many years ago and a promise made by the author. Sure you learn a little about the 65-69 Chargers --Sid Gilman as the team's executive, primarily. But what you really learn is about the man, Frank Buncmon and you are reminded about the time in which he grew up and excelled. As a nation, we should not be allowed to forget the sixties and the civil rights movement and the incredible bigotry that existed (and still exists?) in many parts of the country. Buzz reminds us while framing the life of the All Star linebacker. If you're a football fan of any generation --not just the sixties-- this book should appeal to you. If you're a person who likes a good book on friendship and positive mentoring, this book should appeal to you. If you're the type of person who 'worships' his or her idols, this book should convince you that worshiping an athlete is not as important as respecting what that person has accomplished and how that person has lived their lives. And finally, the younger generation may find some inspiration for establishing a family legacy by leading by example. Maybe? There's hope. Frank did it.Product details

Finding Frank eBook Buzz Ponce Reviews
As someone that has always loved football that also was a child of the 60's this book brought back many memories.
Buzz Ponce's heartfelt recollection of Frank Buncom personifies the intense impact that one human being can have on another one life perspective. Ponce narrative of one of the most turbulent times in modern American history flows with such incredible eloquence that any reader will be engulfed by his masterful prose
I truly loved reading this book Ponce writing style takes no back seat to anyone. You will love it also..
The author does a super job of layering the life of an exceptional college and NFL football player with the tumultuous times of the 60's and his own trial by fire as a high school football player. You feel the sensitivity and humor of a star athlete who had little reason to be as caring as he was, but benefitted so many he touched. Frankly (pardon me) my only criticism of the book is that it was not longer to dig even further into those colorful layers.
I really enjoyed this book. I am a Charger fan and it takes place in my hometown. It also has a lot of history of how people felt about race issues in that era. I have recommended this book to others.
Knowing Frank while he was in the Air Force, March AFB, and later. He was one close friend. Thank you for filling in the life of him and family. Dwight Elder. Kingshark1142@comcast
Finding Frank is a well written book that has amazing connections for the future. You see, the author, Buzz Ponce, has not only followed the Buncom family for decades, Frank Buncom's grandson is currently a senior in high school with a 4.3 GPA and will probably be playing football at Stanford next year!
Like others who have reviewed this book, I found the story of Frank Buncom to be uplifting. His short life story is a reminder that anyone can have an impact on another's life just by taking the time to care. It is also a cautionary tale to not put off telling other how you feel because tomorrow or next year may be too late. Kudos to Buzz Ponce for sharing this story.
